B. mendica is native to North Africa, the Canary Islands and is sometimes spotted in parts of South Europe. This species will grow to around 5-6cm, with the males obviously being slightly smaller. Males are slimmer and less bulky than the males as with most species. Adult males have large feathery antennae which is the same for most, if not all Empusids (species in the family Empusidae). This species is not considered a beginner species, much like all the other Empusids, due to the conditions it requires and it's sensitivity.
